Set within a 1929 Art Deco building in the heart of Fitzrovia, Nineteen Wells Street transforms two floors of workspace for Great Portland Estates. While the building retains its celebrated façade, the interiors had been stripped back over time, presenting an opportunity to reimagine the principles of Art Deco for a contemporary workplace.

The design draws on the character of Fitzrovia and the craftsmanship associated with the area’s historic leather workers, wallpaper manufacturers and coffee-house culture. Responding to a brief for a welcoming and timeless workspace, residential and hospitality influences are woven throughout the scheme to create an environment that feels inviting, considered and crafted to endure. This sense of welcome is visible from the street, where large windows reveal an interior more reminiscent of a café or lounge than a traditional office.

Across both floors, bold Art Deco gestures are balanced with warm, neutral materials and bespoke detailing. A sculptural raspberry-red spiral staircase forms the centrepiece of the project, connecting a light-filled ground floor with a more intimate lower-ground level designed for collaboration and focused work. Bespoke rugs, handcrafted joinery and subtle geometric references reinforce the building’s heritage, creating a workplace that feels deeply connected to both its architectural history and the wider character of Fitzrovia.
